Happy New Year!
I'm hoping you all had a great new year and this first month of 2015 has been enjoyable and productive. I know I am greeting this year with open arms. Hopefully, the frantic calls for assistance and down horses will temper and I can focus on the horses and barns on this little patch of land in Spring Valley. AND get the remaining hay moved to THE FARM!!
Volunteer Training at Refuge Farms consists of two (2) parts - 1) Safety and 2) Horse Handling. The safety portion of the class is a regular class we complete at THE STORE and is the pre-requisite for the second portion of the training, the horse handling portion. The Horse Handling Classes are a series of classes (4 total) that will get you up close and personal with some of our residents. Those that complete both portions are the people who handle our horses here at THE FARM and also at events throughout the year.
Our insurance coverage mandates that those of us who handle/mingle with the horses - including me! - attend both portions each and every year. We work hard to get the safety portion completed prior to the snow beginning to melt. And then we push hard through handling classes.
So it is time to schedule our Volunteer Safety Training classes for 2015. The horse part of the volunteer safety training - called The Horse Handling Classes - will be scheduled at this Volunteer Safety Training class so please remember to bring your calendars with you to this first meeting!
We will hold this Volunteer Safety Training Class at THE STORE at 230 East Main Street in downtown Menomonie. Parking will be free as meters are not enforced on the days of our classes. Our store is directly across the street from the post office building. The telephone number is 715.505.5626 and I will have the phone on until the meeting begins. There is no dress code but remember THE STORE is drafty so warm shoes will be important. And Lucy lives at THE STORE so there will be a cat in your lap (if she honors you by selecting your lap) and she does leave some cat hair behind!
I'm going to throw out two (2) dates for the safety classes. I am asking you to RSVP for the class that works best for you. All classes will be on a Sunday afternoon since we are open for business on Saturdays. From experience, I am not scheduling classes on a week night and the classes will be held prior to the warmth of spring so we won't feel badly about sitting inside on a nice afternoon!
Please note that if you do not RSVP, I will take this as a decline for participating as a volunteer for 2015. If this is the case, thank you for your past service and remember we need and would welcome you when your life allows you to rejoin us!
If you would like to support our Missions by working at THE STORE, working at the Applebee's breakfasts, and like events but not be participating with the horses, then I have scheduled a "Friends of THE FARM" set of classes. This is, likewise, a mandatory class for our Friends of THE FARM and will deal with public relations, dress code, and peripheral topics contained in the handout. Likewise, I am asking that you RSVP for the Friends class that works best for you if you are opting to be a Friend of THE FARM versus a Volunteer of THE FARM.
I will circulate the handout, the volunteer application, and the disclaimer when I email those that have RSVP'd to confirm class dates and attendees. The application and disclaimer should be completed prior to attending your selected meeting and I would suggest you at least review the handout prior to the meeting. We will be reading the handout during the meetings so please bring your performing voice with you!
The two Volunteer (wanting to be in with the horses) Safety Training class and Friends of THE FARM class dates are:
Sunday, February 22nd from 1pm to 4pm
Sunday, March 8th from 1pm to 4pm
This is a lot to absorb, I know. If you have questions, please ask! If you are unclear, I guarantee you that someone else is unclear, too!
So - if you want to support our Mission in 2015 in either a horse or horseless capacity, you will need to attend a volunteer safety class (horse style) or a friend class (horseless style). Please RSVP your choice of class for your respective style and then I'll confirm and send you the documentation. Remember, If you do not RSVP, I will take this as a decline for participating in either capacity in 2015. And remember, we need you so please RSVP!
RSVP's will be expected before February 9th. Please note this deadline.
There you go! The start of another year of rescue! And in this coming year, we will be celebrating over 1,000 horses rescued. An enormous accomplishment and one to celebrate! Join us, please?
Thanks!!
Sandy and The Herd
NOTE: If you are new to Refuge Farms but interested in volunteering in either capacity, please email me at refugefarms@hotmail.com and we'll get you in the groove. Step One: RSVP'ing to the class of your choice. The paperwork and training will flow from there. Welcome to The Other Herd!!
